So a lot of stuff has been happening recently. I've been so busy with work and I'm going to Poland and it's Xmas coming and it's all so hectic!! For some crazy reason me and the boyf thought it would be a good idea to try and go in live in New York and get internships for a while next year. You know, as you do. Now it turns out that it might actually happen and soon. The prospect of being able to help out at fashion week has swayed me immensely. I need help, my brain hurts.
- where are we going to live?
- how are we going to afford this?
- are allowed to even go and do internships in the US?
- what am I going to do with all my stuff?
- how am I going to get this sorted by mid January?
- am I doing the right thing?
If anyone can answer any of these questions for me I'd be forever indebted to you. I need advice/contacts/anything you can give me! Bloggers please help a fellow blogger in need. If you know anyone/anything that could help us we'd be so happy.

ok, i have moved over 30 times. and once, it was to n.y. with my bf, only we left within 24 hours of our decision to go! i can help with some of your questions:
1. don't have any fancy ideas of where you will live, just make sure it will be SAFE. look at real estate listings and rentals online before getting there. have someone set up to show you these properties immediately upon arrival.
2. make sure you have money to pay for your flat when you get there. that might mean saving a little more than usual right now even though it's christmas...
4. get rid of most of your stuff, sell it on ebay or donate it, except for meaningful stuff that you want to keep forever, and then put it in a storage unit. don't put stuff that can be replaced into a storage unit, because the money you end up paying for storage could actually be used to buy these items all over again someday...
5. of course you will, and it will be so fun to do!
6. YES YES YES!!! you only live once! no day but today!

i can only say that you may need to get a work visa, especially if it will be a paid internships... i know that a lot of the magazines don't do paid internships, or they pay a real pittance, so you may have to work out if they actually classify as 'real' work for a visa... still, it all depends, the US is really weird on its working laws.. just go to the US consulate and ask them, or have a look in the internet.
another thing is, like sarah said, really make sure that you have saved up a bit of money before you go so that you have enough to pay your rent. i don't know how long you're thinking of going for, but i'm sure you will have a fabulous time either way, provided that you have a roof over your head and something to pay it with. This is going to be even more pertinent if you're on an unpaid internship, although as you said you want to help with fashion week then you may get paid as the designers/organisers etc. often pay their interns.
anyway, yeah, by having some money saved up teh strain of rent is not so hard and you will have more to play around with. that is really good advice, seriously.
ah i hope you do it! it would be a real dream, seriously. but you should definitely try, i mean, you only live once. do everything you want, you will have such a ball!

3. Yes - as long as you want it bad enough, someone will always let you work for free (internships are usually free)
4. NY is more important than your stuff! Keep your stuff at our parent house!

Hey, I lived in NYC for a while and thought you could use some of the housing tips I've picked up. Living in Manhattan is expensive. You're going to be spending at least $2,000/month for a one bedroom (yes, even in the Lower East Side), and anywhere from about $1200-$1600 for a SINGLE ROOM in a 2-3 bedroom apartment. If you want to pinch pennies, I would recommend living in Brooklyn. It's significantly cheaper and most artist-types (the true artist types, I should say) live over there. You can get a room for about $700 in Williamsburg and maybe even cheaper in Carroll Gardens. Since you're only going to be there for a few months, you should check out craigslist.com under the 'Sublets' section. I would recommend emailing and looking for housing once you're in NYC. Stay at a hostel or crash with some friends while you spend a week or so looking for housing. Sometimes it doesn't even take that long.
As for budgeting, I would say that you should have at least $1000/month ($700 for rent, $78 for monthly subway pass, the rest for food/drinks/clothes/going out) to be comfortable. I've heard of people living on less, but you're definitely going to be picking and choosing things you can do/eat, which can make you a little :(
As for getting internships, you should email designers. I would try lesser known designers as they'd be more desperate to get interns and will probably give you more actual experience instead of just making you do Starbucks runs. You can also try emailing stylists and photographers as they also use interns to help them during fashion week.

Hello! I'm extremely late in trying to help you out but howandever... I'm actually moving to NYC myself in February and doing an internship as well. Luckily for me I was born there so don't need a visa.
Seeing as how most internships are unpaid, I think you could get away without a visa if you're only going to be there for something like 30 days. I presume you're going for longer than that though... Actually, even if you wanted to waitress somewhere on the side to make up for your living expenses, lots of restaurants hire illegals so you could do that and your internship.
I think you should definitely have a good bit saved before you head over for rent and transport. You can eat relatively cheap in NY.
I would definitely recommend the move though.
I myself am both terrified and excited.
